The Domain Name Extension you pick can have a Huge Impact on your Website!
These days there are so many possible domain name extensions to choose from that it is not even funny. This really is not a complicated issue unless you choose to make it so. These are some of my rough opinions and thoughts related to domain names as a webmaster and investor.
Except in certain rare cases I recommend that you stick with the 3 major domain name extensions .com, .net, and .org. For a general website with a global audience these three extensions are established and have a certain psychological impact or trust built into them. If you are running a website that targets a certain geographic area then you might want to look at the appropriate extension. Just keep in mind that not all country code domain name extensions are as popular. Two of the most popular country domain extensions include .de and .co.uk.
There are many people that are making poor investment decisions when buying or investing in a domain name. Yes certain domain hacks and words will give a good return but it is risky as compared to sticking with the main three top level extensions. It seems like a lot of domainers are looking for the next big thing and most of those will be flops if you ask me. I do not feel that buying a domain in extensions like .tv or .co is wise as a whole. The argument for .co is that it is a typo of .com. As far as I see it is a type of typo squatting and would only be effective on high traffic domains.
I guess what I am saying is that if you choose to stick with a major more popular extension you are setting yourself up for more success. By doing this your virtual real estate is most likely going to appreciate easier and be more desirable, than if you were to go with some obscure domain extension.
